UD women fall to #23 Green Bay on School Day

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton women's basketball team battled back against the No. 23 Green Bay Phoenix, but was unable to surmount the early deficit in a 76-64 loss in front of 8,416 Flyers fans.

The Flyers (5-3) suffered their first loss at home this season while the Phoenix (7-1) continue their strong campaign.

KEY MOMENT

6:32 in the second quarter – The Flyers had pulled within four at 22-18 at the 6:32 mark, but a run by the Phoenix pushed their advantage to double digits by the 4:09 mark.

GAME BREAKDOWN

1st Quarter: Dayton 12, Green Bay 16

Green Bay struck first with a three at the 8:48 mark to open the game.

Sophomore Jayla Scaife and senior Jenna Burdette hit a pair of buckets to keep the Flyers with the Phoenix at 5-5.

At the media break, Dayton trailed just two at 12-10.

The Flyers held the Phoenix in check to a 1-for-10 stretch and a 3:42 field goal drought.

Green Bay didn't commit its first foul until the :58 mark.

Scaife scored 10 of Dayton's 12 points.

2nd Quarter: Dayton 27, Green Bay 40

The Phoenix extended their lead to eight at 20-12 in the first three minutes of the second quarter before a Burdette three ended the run.

Junior Lauren Cannatelli hit a contested bucket and the free throw to pull the Flyers back within four, 22-18.

Halfway through the quarter, Dayton was down 27-21.

Jessica Lindstrom had 16 of Green Bay's first 31 points. She tied a career-high with five three's in the first half alone.

In the first half, Dayton shot 33.3 percent while Green Bay shot 48.5 percent.

The Flyers were outscored in the paint 22-4.

3rd Quarter: Dayton 38, Green Bay 56

The second half started slow with neither team hitting a field goal until the 8:00 mark with a three by junior Tiaera Phillips.

Green Bay didn't make a field goal until 6:49 to go in the third.

Cannatelli and Burdette joined Scaife as double digit scorers in the game.

Dayton pulled back within 12 by the media break at 48-36.

Green Bay went on an 8-0 run over the next 3:32 during a 5:17 drought for Dayton, pushing their lead to 20 at 56-36.

Burdette's 13 points led UD through three quarters.

4th Quarter: Dayton 64, Green Bay 75

Dayton narrowed the margin to 14 to start the fourth, forcing a Green Bay timeout, as part of a 6-0 run.

The Flyers kept the game around a 12-point margin for the next few minutes as they fought to get back within striking distance of the Phoenix.

Dayton closed the gap even further to 10 at 65-55.

In the end, the foul game was not enough to get the Flyers on top.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Dayton shot 37.3 percent from the field while Green Bay shot 49.1 percent from the floor.

The Flyers had a 15-18 turnover advantage.

Cannatelli led UD with 17 points and had five rebounds.

Burdette had 16 points, Layfield had 12 points, and Scaife had 10 points.

The Flyers hit nine threes in the contest.

Cannatelli had a career-high eight assists.

Dayton was outscored 22-4 in the paint in the first half.

It was Dayton's first loss at home since School Day last season on Dec. 9 against Toledo. It ended an 11-game home winning streak for the Flyers.
