Six Things You Need to Know about Self-Defense
UPDATED: 9:40 AM EDT
CENTERVILLE -- In light of recent abduction attempts in Dayton, are you prepared to protect yourself and prevent being abducted?

The Quest Center for Martial Arts in Centerville is offering up six steps, to make sure you get away happy, healthy and alive.

"If someone is coming up from behind me I'm unaware of, I'm going to have to deal with that surprise and ultimately that's why they're doing it is to surprise you," said center director Shane Stevens. He teaches classes at Quest, and has studied self-defense for more than a decade.

Stevens says there are six stages of a surprise attack; the first thing you can do to prevent an attack is to plan for your own safety.

"How are we doing that, we're planning our days out," Stevens says, "If I'm going to the grocery store, what time am I going to the grocery store? If I'm going at night, am I parking under a light?"

Second, Stevens says you should always actively scan your surroundings. That way if you spot a threat you can do the third step -- evacuate to safety. If you can't get away, try the fourth step -- diffusing the tension. That can be done by simply confronting the attacker or potential abductor verbally.

Fifth, confront and dissuade the attacker by demonstrating you will not become a victim. Continue verbal offenses, and know basic defense moves that are non-aggressive.

Sixth and finally, if your attacker is still pursuing you, physical defense may be the only option. Stevens offers classes to teach these defense moves, and mentioned if your attacker is coming at you from behind, you can do something as simple as shift your weight and stomp on their foot to dissuade them from continuing the attack.

"You may have an idea 'if this happens I'm going to do this'," said Detective Denise Smith with the Moraine Police Department, "But you have to prepare yourself if 'this' doesn't work, what other options do I have available?"

Smith has been involved in self-defense workshops since the 1990s and stresses if your self-defense techniques don't work and the abductor is able to get you into a vehicle, you should get creative with alternate defense plans.

"You don't have to have the traditional weapons, it may be a pencil, there may be an ice scraper, it may be a DVD case, it may be something you can use as a weapon towards this person," said Smith.

"How can I set the stage so it's more difficult for them to achieve their goal," Stevens added.

The Quest Center for Martial Arts is hosting a special self-defense class geared toward high school and college students on Saturday, August 2, from 1:30- 3 p.m. at 6236 Far Hills Avenue in Centerville.

Donations of $10 are suggested, and all money will go to the Artemis Center, a resource for victims of domestic violence.
