UD softball falls to Fordham

DAYTON - The University of Dayton softball team opened Atlantic 10 Conference play at home against Fordham Friday. The Rams claimed two wins over the Flyers, 2-0 and 6-4.

Dayton is now 8-16 overall and 0-2 in A-10 action while Fordham moves to 11-15 on the season and 2-0 in league action.

SCORING BREAKDOWN

Game One: Fordham 2, Dayton 0

Neither team was able to muster much offense in the first game as both squads battled it out on the defensive end. The score remained knotted at zeros until the top of the seventh when Fordham made its move. The lead-off batter doubled and moved around to third on a Ram single. With two on, a single to the right field fence plated both runners to give Fordham a 2-0 lead, which proved to be the final margin. In the bottom of the seventh, senior Kailee Budicin doubled to get into scoring position but the Flyers were unable to convert. Senior left-handed pitcher Manda Cash tallied five strikeouts in the loss.

Losing pitcher: Cash (3-5)

Game Two: Fordham 6, Dayton 4

Fordham got its offense going in the second inning with three consecutive hits followed by a putout at first that scored its first two runs. Dayton got one back in the bottom of the third when Budicin singled in freshman Hannah Heraty from second to set the score at 2-1 in favor of Fordham. The Rams' tallied a single run in the fourth with a solo home run but the Flyers scored two in the bottom of the frame to even the score at three runs apiece. Both squads plated a run in the fifth and headed to the sixth tied at 4-4. Fordham led off the sixth with a solo homer and was able to bring across a second run to move in front, 6-4. Dayton had runners on the corners in the seventh but Fordham was able to hang on for the 6-4 win.

Losing pitcher: Jessica Gilliam (3-6)

.429 = Budicin led the Flyer offense on the day with a 3-for-7 outing at the plate

8.2 = The number of innings worked by Cash. She tallied six strikeouts to three walks and gave up two earned runs on the day.

2 = Junior Kayla Haberstich was hit by a pitch twice in the second game

UP NEXT

Dayton and Fordham will close out their three-game series on either Saturday or Sunday. Due to forecasted weather and low temperatures, a final decision will be made Saturday morning.
