Dayton splits doubleheader with St. Louis

DAYTON - The University of Dayton softball team split its mid-week Atlantic 10 doubleheader with Saint Louis Thursday at UD Softball Stadium. The Flyers took game one, 11-4, and the Billikens came out on the winning end of a 5-2 margin in the nightcap. Sophomore Julia Blarr recorded her first home run in extraordinary fashion with a grand slam in game one.

Dayton is now 13-19 on the season and 4-4 in A-10 action while Saint Louis moves to 19-16 overall and 5-3 in league play.

SCORING BREAKDOWN

Game One: Dayton 11, Saint Louis 4

Senior Kailee Budicin scored the first run of the day in the first inning to give Dayton a quick 1-0 lead. The Flyers put up three more in the second after loading the bases with the first three batters of the inning to pull in front of the Billikens, 4-0. UD's lead was 5-0 after Budicin singled in junior Kyle Davidson in the fourth. The SLU bats came alive in the fifth after Alyssa Tarquinio led off the frame with a solo home run. The Billikens scored all four of their runs in the fifth and cut the Flyer lead to one, 5-4. In the bottom of the inning, Dayton tacked on one more run before exploding for five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Julia Blarr pinch hit with the bases loaded and sent her first career home run over the left-center fence to give Dayton its final margin of 11-4.

Losing pitcher: Maddie Baalman (12-10)

Game Two: Saint Louis 5, Dayton 2

Dayton started the second game in similar fashion with a single run in the first inning but Saint Louis answered with a two-run homer in the second to go in front, 2-1. The Billikens got two more across in the third and the score remained 4-1 in favor of SLU until the bottom of the sixth. Junior Lisa Tassi's run in the sixth cut the Saint Louis lead to two, 4-2, but that would be as close as Dayton would get. SLU added one more run in the seventh with a solo home run to set the score at 5-2.

Winning pitcher: Kallen Loveless (2-2)

Losing pitcher: Jessica Weaver (2-7)

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

.571 = Tassi's batting average on the day (4-for-7). She scored two runs, collected two RBI, recorded three putouts and tallied three assists.

6 = the career-tying number of strikeouts recorded in Weaver's complete game

4 = the number of RBI recorded by Blarr on one hit

3-3 = the Flyers stolen bases in as many attempts on the day

UP NEXT

Dayton remains at home this weekend for a three-game set with La Salle at UD Softball Stadium. The Flyers and Explorers will play a doubleheader Saturday with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
