FAIRBORN, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - AMSOIL Arenacross kicks off its 2018 season Saturday night at the Wright State Nutter Center, but one local rider will turn heads just like the pros.

"All I know is it's going to be fun," Preston Ross said.

The 8-year-old Lebanon native will compete in the Ultracross 50cc race in the 4-8 age group.

"It's going to be great," Ross said. "The dirt is soft and good."

Ross has been riding dirt bikes since he got his first for his fourth birthday.

"Oh he was happy," Preston's dad, Patrick, said. "He just couldn't take off, so I had to run around the yard holding him. I got skinnier."

Patrick started riding when he was 16 years old and wanted to get his son going early.

"By the time he's 12 he'll be really good."

Preston and his family travel all over the country for events like the one he'll compete in Saturday at the Nutter Center. In two weeks, Preston will head to Phoenix for another event.

"He's tried soccer, he's tried tee ball," Preston's mom, Jeanette Mattfield, said. "But his heart is in motocross. It's extremely nerve-wracking, but it's very gratifying to see your son grow race after race, year after year."

Saturday night Preston will get to show off in front of all his friends and family.

"The moment will be what I tell him every time he gets ready to take off the start gate," Jeanette said. "Make good decisions, make smart choices, but bang them bikes!"

Doors open to the general public at the Nutter Center Saturday at 6 p.m. Preston's event is scheduled to run shortly after 8:15.
