Tennessee emergency responders rescue woman, baby who fell 20 ft. into storm drain

    CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) - Tennessee emergency responders rescued a woman and her baby after they fell through a storm grate Thursday.

    At around 6:37 p.m., responders were called for reports that a woman and a baby fell through a storm grate. Police say a woman was walking through a parking lot, carrying her baby, when she walked across a storm grate and it "gave way."

    The woman and child fell 20 feet into the storm drain and came to rest at the bottom. Police say the basin of the drain was dry.

    A passerby heard the baby crying in the drain, but could not see them and called 911.

    Emergency responders arrived on scene and made entry through another entrance into the drain. They were able to safely extract the woman and baby around 7:15 p.m.

    The woman was flown to a Nashville hospital for treatment. Police say the extent of her injuries are unknown, but she was conscious, talking and no visible signs of serious injury. The baby, who is under a year old, had a cut but did not appear to have life threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.
