UPDATE: West Carrollton couple's death ruled a murder-suicide

UPDATE: The deaths of a West Carrollton couple found in their home New Year's Eve night has been ruled a murder suicide.

According to the Montgomery County Coroner's office, Alma Smelko, 83, died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. Her husband, John Smelko, also 83, died as the result of a gunshot wound to the torso. The coroner's office has ruled Alma Smelko's death a homicide and John Smelko's death a suicide.


WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - The Montgomery County Coroner's office has released the identity of a West Carrollton couple found dead inside their home Sunday.

According to the coroner's office, John and Alma Smelko, both 83, were found inside their home in the 300 block of Enxing Avenue. West Carrollton Police say officers were called to the couple's home around 10:00 p.m. Sunday after someone found them unresponsive.

It's unclear at this time what caused the couple's deaths, an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. Police say an investigation is being launched into the couple's death and more information will be released at a later time. Investigators are asking anyone with information to call them at 937-859-3688.
