CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) -- A vigil was held on Saturday night, November 4, 2017, as a local school district mourns the death of one of its students.
Champaign county deputies say Graham High School 10th grader Sara Hess died after here and another student, Gabe Weir, were rear-ended just outside Saint Paris on State Route 235 in Champaign County.
Hess played volleyball and played in the band. She was also involved in the community.
Fox 45 was at the vigil and talked to the victim's best friend, McKenna Brown, who said Hess was the nicest person you'd ever meet.
"She was my best friend like since kindergarten," said Brown, "I've been thinking about like a lot of our memories and looking at a lot of pictures and crying a lot."
Weir sustained multiple injuries but is in stable condition.
"He wants everybody to know that he's going to be ok. His family wants everyone to know that they appreciate the outpouring of community support," said Graham Local School Superintendent Kirk Koennecke.
Tonight lots of hugs, tears and prayers at a solemn candlelight vigil at the high school.
"It's a good idea to have everybody together. It's just something people need to process on their own time but having everybody together really helps that," said Brown.
At least 100 people came out here tonight to show comfort and support for each other.
"We have to grieve together, come together as a community. Make sure we mourn the loss of Sara Hess and also celebrate her life," said Koennecke.
"She was like straight A student. She always did everything and she loved volleyball alot. She loved volleyball," said Brown.
Brown lost another friend recently.
"I knew Connor really, really well," said Brown.
Connor Williams went to Greenon High School.
In August, he too died in a car accident.
As for Brown and Hess, they had a lot of fun together.
"We used to go on like mini vacations for our birthdays together and we'd like go to movies an hang out all the time," said Brown.
She's going to miss their friendship.
"I just miss her , daily," said Brown.
Hess's mother is a teacher at Graham High School.
Grief counselors were at the school today, and about 40 staff and more than 50 students went to see them.
Counselors will also be at the school all next week.
