Update: Gas leak ruled out as cause for double fatal Springfield fire
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - In a statement to FOX 45, Dave Rau with Columbia Gas of Ohio confirmed a leak did not cause an early Sunday morning fire that killed two people.
The statement reads in part:
"After completing testing, Columbia Gas is confident that our lines were not the cause of the fire. Our meter and the other above-ground portion of our gas line were severely damaged by the fire. However, we were able to test the underground portion of the lines and they showed no leaks. We also checked gas lines throughout the neighborhood, and we can assure neighbors that they are safe. We will continue to work with the Springfield Fire Rescue Division and others investigating this incident. "
Chief Brian Miller with the City of Springfield Fire Rescue Division confirmed crews uncovered a male body in a home on Wiley Avenue. A second body was found hours later. The bodies were transported to the Montgomery County Crime Lab for identification. Springfield Police said the house went up in flames at 1:46 am on the 800 block of Wiley Avenue.
This case is still under investigation.
