Toy drive to benefit kids impacted by opioid epidemic

XENIA, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - A Xenia man is making sure no child is left behind this holiday season.

The Recovery Toy Drive is underway for kids who've lost their guardians to the opioid epidemic.

“We’re providing Christmas gifts for children who lost a parent to an accidental overdose,” says Richard Matteoli. “They are kind of the most innocent victims in this opioid crisis that’s plaguing this community.”

Matteoli is a former addict and was inspired by what he’s seen in the community to lift up others directly impacted by the opioid crisis.

He says he still needs to provide gifts for about 40 more kids in the area. You can donate new, unwrapped toys, books or gift cards at the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Xenia.

Children will receive their toys on Saturday December 9th at a celebration at the Lighthouse Baptist Church on 2040 W 2nd St.

“Having all those kids come together who’ve gone through that same tragedy, it gives them a chance to bond and make friends with each other,” says Matteoli.
