Dayton woman gets threatening calls from scammer
DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - Patricia Adkins said all she wanted was a lower cable bill.
Instead, she got half a dozen phone calls from an alleged customer service representative, who threatened to kill her. It started after she called Spectrum to cancel her service. A man claiming to be a Spectrum employee called her back, trying to get her to stay with the company.
"He was very polite in the beginning," Adkins told FOX 45's Shavon Anderson.
When she wouldn't change her mind, "He started to spout profanities at me, and call me every name in the book."
This is a transcript of the voicemail he left, after calling several times.
"Oh, hi b****. I got your number here. I've got your address, and all of your information here. You know what I'm gonna do? I'm going to send someone to burn your house down. I'm going to kill every family member you can think of in your life. Okay? F*** you."
Hearing the message back, she broke into tears.
"I'm terrified," she said. "I can't stress that enough."
Because he has all her information, even specifications from her cable equipment and internet speeds. Adkins called Spectrum's corporate office, saying she spoke with David Gatty, Physical Security Supervisor at Charter Communications.
"He has denied that this is a representative, and no one has admitted that they've sold my information to anyone," said Adkins.
FOX 45 talked with Michael Pedelty, a regional Communications Director with Spectrum. Pedelty said the phone number was a known scam caller, and not affiliated with the company.
"My biggest concern is the privacy policies, for the elderly and more vulnerable people," Adkins said.
"Unless you object in advance, federal law also allows Charter to disclose through "mailing lists," personally identifiable information, such as Your name, address and the level of Your service subscription, to non-affiliated entities, including advertisers and marketing entities, for non-service related purposes, including product advertisement, direct marketing and research."
Pedelty told FOX 45 that although it is allowed by law, Charter Spectrum does not give information to third-parties.
Worried that scammers might find an easy target, Adkins contacted local police, the FTC, the FBI and Attorney General. Authorities told her the number is linked to New Jersey, with several other open complaints.
Spectrum said if customers get calls that they aren’t comfortable with, they should report the call, try to get the caller’s name, keep the phone number, and register your number on the national Do Not Call Registry.
