MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents to be on alert with a variety of phone scams circulating in the area.

People have called the office to report they're getting calls from people claiming to be with the Sheriff's Office who say they have a warrant out for their arrest, have missed a court date or have unpaid fines. Another common scam going on in the area has targeted older residents, where they're told a family member is in jail or hospitalized, or that an urgent debt must be paid.

The scammers then ask residents for credit card information over the phone, or to buy a gift card for various stores for payment. They've even been able to clone the department's phone number so it actually looks like the sheriff's office is the one calling you.

Officials are reminding everyone that hey'll never call you and threaten arrest for unpaid fines, warrants or missed court dates. If you do get an unsolicited call, hang up and reach out to your local police department.
