Montgomery Co. Sheriff offering 'Vacation House Checks' for residents
DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - If you live in Montgomery County and are leaving your home to go on vacation, the sheriff's office is now offering a "Vacation House Check" service.
Residents can fill out an online form, letting the sheriff's office know what dates they'll be away from home. They'll also have to let authorities know who will have access to the home while they're away. "Vacation house checks aren’t meant to replace other safety measures. We come up and check doors and windows and make sure nothings ajar," said Sheriff Phil Plummer. "We want to be able to help you feel better about being gone and hopefully this will make you feel safer and a little bit more secure."
Deputies say they'll be looking for things that are out of the ordinary. For example, if you tell them there should be no vehicles parked in the driveway, and deputies spot vehicles in the driveway, they'll know something's up. If deputies spot anything out of the ordinary, they'll notify the dispatch center.
Sheriff Plummer says the checks will be done as time allows, but it is a service that will be free of charge. The checks will be available in: Clayton, Clay Township, Dayton, Germantown, German Township, Harrison Township, Jefferson Township, Miami Township, Miamisburg, Phillipsburg, Perry Township, Trotwood, and Washington Township. If you community is not listed, and you live in Montgomery County, call the dispatch center to ask about the service.
