FOX 45 Investigates: Kettering family left in the cold says landlord won't fix their issue
KETTERING, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - A Kettering family is without heat or hot water in the bitter cold, after a gas leak forced theirs to be shut off.
Lily Pheanis said they have been begging their landlord to fix it since it happened on December 23.
The Kettering Fire Department confirmed to FOX 45 they were called for the leak, and said Vectren responding to the scene put a lock on the gas meter until the leaks inside the home could be fixed.
Pheanis said in the six days since, they have been using their oven and space heaters to keep the Bingham Drive home warm.
"We've been boiling water to bathe, and also the steam to go in the house," Pheanis told FOX 45's Kelly May.
Pheanis said she thought the extreme cold and snow would motivate her landlord to fix the problem fast.
"I would think so especially with a 16 month old baby being in the house," Pheanis said.
But, six days of freezing temperatures later, no fix in sight.
Pheanis said on Friday the City of Kettering served them with a notice that the home will be condemned if the heat problem isn't fixed by January 2.
FOX 45 called the landlord, who said the holidays have slowed down repairs, but he plans to send workers out to fix the leak on Tuesday.
He also said he has asked the city not to re-inspect until Wednesday.
"My family, we have nowhere to go besides here," Pheanis said, "What is it five days until its supposed to be condemned? That's not enough time to find a house."
