FOX 45 gets inside look at improvements to Miami Valley Shooting Grounds (WKEF/WRGT)

VANDALIA, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - Weeks after the Miami Valley Shooting Grounds closed, its future is in the hands of Vandalia officials, who are currently reviewing the range’s new permit application.

The range lost their permit last month, after their lawyer said an oversight from 2007, led police to recently discover that not all of their facilities had current permits.

"The current law under the Vandalia code is for the Chief of Police to decide whether what we are asking to do creates a hazard and a danger to the welfare of the safety of the people of this community,” attorney Timothy Rudd said.

FOX 45 toured the MVSG, getting a look at its safety systems and improvements. The range added a written policy, requiring supervision of one Range Safety Officer for every six shooters. That rule applies to both indoor and outdoor facilities.

The outdoor pistol shooting bays have 50-foot elevated backstops, with built in panels designed to control where bullets go, also limiting shooters’ range of mobility.

The southern range has new concrete baffles, slabs engineered to not only decrease noise, but make it impossible for bullets to leave the property, according to owners.

The safety protocols were noted by an independent inspection earlier this month. A tactical expert gave he facility a glowing review, saying the primary backstop exceeded all guidelines by the NRA. The inspector added that the it’s “the most secure outdoor range I have ever inspected.”

The full report was given to the city, which said there’s no timeline on when they’ll make a decision.

"We'll do what we have to do to make sure we get one,” Rudd told FOX 45’s Shavon Anderson.

FOX 45 previously investigated claims that bullets were coming from the range and hitting nearby properties. The lawyer said the inspection and the changes are in no way tied to those accusations, which is an ongoing legal matter.
