ZANESFIELD, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - Skiers and snowboarders braved frigid temperatures to ring in 2018 at Mad River Mountain.

"Today's very cold, but if you dress right there's nothing wrong with it," Mike Allemang, a Mad River Mountain skier since 1975, said.

The cold is a welcome feeling for the ski resort which is seeing one of its best seasons in recent memory.

"We have a better base than we've had int he last two years and we just barely got into the new year," resort General Manager Tom Price said. "The snow conditions are just unbelievable."

The resort is inching close to a five foot base at the summit and all trails are open.

But the frigid temperatures offer a danger to skiers and riders if they don't take necessary precautions. Ski patrol recommends wearing layers and not leaving skin exposed.

"Our lift attendants see everybody ever few minutes as they ride the lift. They get to know the customers, see how they're doing and make sure everyone is aware of the chill that's out here especially in the evenings," Price said.

Mad River Mountain is open from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
