UPDATE:
KETTERING -- A murder suspect brandishing a knife is killed by a trooper.
The Highway Patrol is looking to see if it's a case of suicide by cop.
The incident started a little after 1 o'clock July 4, 2017 on National at Ranchview.
Minutes later the knife wielding man was dead.
"You don't charge an officer with a deadly weapon let's start there," said witness Cody Allwood.
That's what happened according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.
"Our trooper was conducting a stop on a vehicle that ran a red light and he was in the process of writing the ticket when the other vehicle rammed into the rear of our car," said Ohio Highway Patrol Lieutenant Robert Sellers.
The trooper got out of his car the same time 36-year-old Dana Dubose of Cincinnati got out of his car covered in blood.
"The cop got out like what the , what's going on and immediately the guy has his knife in hand and the cop's telling him drop the gun uh weapon, drop the weapon and he refused," said Allwood.
"Trooper gave that suspect verbal commands. The suspect would not follow those verbal commands," said Sellers.
"It felt like he was practically prompting the cop to kill me, kill me, is what it seems like," said Allwood.
Another officer shows up on the scene.
After that happened the man i think felt more threatened and more heated and then charged I believe who was the state trooper with the knife.
Sellers said Dubose had his knife extended when lunging at the trooper.
"Ultimately the trooper engaged that suspect with his service weapon and that suspect is now deceased," said Sellers.
Troopers said this happened a little more than an hour after police in Springfield Township in Hamilton County found a woman stabbed to death at her home.
Dubose is suspected in her death.
As for the trooper, "our trooper is fine. He did sustain some injuries from the traffic crash but he is fine," said Sellers.
The name of the trooper involved in the shooting is not being released right now.
He is on administrative leave, which is normal procedure.
According to the Ohio Department of Corrections, Dana Dubose was sentenced to a year in prison in 2015 for domestic violence and a weapons charge.
He served seven months.
VANDALIA, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating after a trooper shot and killed a Cincinnati man overnight Tuesday.
According to a media release, a trooper had stopped a vehicle on National Road 40 and Ranch View Drive when another vehicle rammed into the trooper’s patrol car.
The male driver who was reportedly covered in blood got out of the car and walked up to the trooper with a knife, at which point the trooper tried to give commands and back away from the man.
The man continued not to listen to the officer, walking across a parking lot adjacent to the road before reportedly lunging at the trooper with a knife extended. At that point, the trooper fired one shot before immediately calling for EMS and providing first aid until first responders arrived.
Dana D. Dubose, 36 of Cincinnati, was pronounced dead at the scene. Springfield Township Police later named him as a suspect in a murder case where a 32-year-old black female was found dead inside a residence on Murat Court just before midnight in the same time frame.
Officers signaled a “99” at some point around the time shots were fired, which suggest an officer needs immediate assistance and any available crews should respond.
Vandalia Police, Vandalia Fire and EMS and Springfield Township Police all responded to assist OSP with the investigation.
