Wright State takes series opener against Oakland
The baseball team broke open a 2-0 game with three runs in the fifth and went on to an 8-3 decision against Oakland Friday night in the opener of a three-game Horizon League series at Nischwitz Stadium.
WSU scored a run in the first as after Matt Morrow dropped a double down the left field line on the first pitch of the game, he later advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Adrian Marquez's single to center.
The Raiders made it 2-0 in the third as a Marquez grounder plated JD Orr, who tripled down the right field line, and extended the margin to 5-0 with three runs in the fourth. Gabe Snyder led off with a triple down the right field line and Seth Gray knocked him in with a hit to right. A bunt and a later throwing error allowed Gray to score and the final run scored as a result of a wild pitch.
Wright State starter Danny Sexton (6-0), the reigning Horizon League Pitcher of the Week, recorded another strong outing, allowing just four singles and a walk in seven scoreless innings while striking out six, lowering his earned run average on the season to 0.57.
Oakland cut the deficit to 5-3 with three unearned runs in the eighth, but WSU answered with three runs of its own in the top of the ninth. Two runs scored on a double to left center by Marquez and he later came in on an error.
Derek Hendrixson pitched the final 1.2 innings for the save, striking out one.
At the plate, Marquez had four RBI to go with two hits while Morrow had three hits and two runs scored, Orr scored twice and Snyder had two hits.
Wright State (16-7, 7-0 Horizon) and Oakland (3-20, 1-3 Horizon) continue the weekend series with a single game Saturday at 2:00.
