The Victory Project is Changing Lives of Young Men
DAYTON -- A retired cop is fighting back against crime, trying to change the lives of troubled young men.
"We don't care where they've been, we care where they're going," Monnie Bush told ABC 22/FOX 45 reporter Chelby Kosto.
Bush is a retired officer, who spent 15 years in law enforcement, fighting crime.
He was tired of seeing the same kids in the system and nobody doing anything about it, so he created The Victory Project.
The Victory Project is a faith-based, non-profit organization specializing in mentoring troubled youth.
Cody Gibson is the programming director.
"Before I started Victory Project, I was into some bad things," Gibson said.
Gibson found himself gravitating toward the "street life."
Gibson got locked up after getting involved in a shooting. "I ended up doing 2 years," he said.
But while in jail, someone visited Gibson, who changed his life.
"I got introduced to Monnie when I was incarcerated."
Gibson is not only a graduate of the Victory Project, he's now a full-time employee.
"If it wasn't for this program, I'd probably be back in jail," Gibson said.
Now, Gibson is using his experiences to teach and inspire others.
"I'm programming director, but I look at my role here as more like a big brother."
Bush said The Victory Project is so much more than an after-school program.
Teens voluntarily come to the center to eat dinner together, they hold Bible studies, but they also work.
They get paid to do painting, landscaping and construction jobs.
"We give them the opportunities they can put on a resume. Now they have work history, and that's very valuable," Bush said.
High school senior Tyler Page has been coming to the Victory Project about a year.
"I used to be shy, but I talk more, and this is the first year I got on the honor roll," Page said.
Bush said it's rewarding to know the program is working.
"I see results every day. I see how smart, how much talent, and how many gifts they have, and to help them, it's a privilege. It's an honor, and a blessing to be a part of it," Bush said.
