Obama to Announce 34,000 Troops to be Home in 1 Year; Families Respond

WPAFB -- A person familiar with President Barack Obama's State of the Union
address says he will announce that 34,000 U.S. troops will be home from
Afghanistan one year from Tuesday.

That's about half the U.S. troops currently in Afghanistan. The decision
marks the next phase in Obama's plans to end the U.S.-led war in
Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

The person who provided the
information did so on condition of anonymity to discuss the drawdown
before the president's announcement.

"Happy, you're still worried for anybody that's deployed. Peace would be a nice thing," said Nancy and her husband Dave Aubel who have two sons in the military.

And even with this announcement, they don't believe they will get to see that peace.

"If you look at history since the nineties either been in Iraq or Afghanistan or other places so there's enough to do to keep our military engaged," said Dave.

"Your on call 24 /7 when they say go you go. I put it in God's hands they've been trained," said Diane Chachula who also has two children in the military. She says the announcement, although nice, doesn't put her at ease.

"They are bringing some home but also sending some over but not as many as they are bringing home so that puts more pressure on the people that are staying over because then they have to do perhaps double the work," Chachula said.

And some military moms remain a little skeptical of the announcement.

"I see all these people being deployed I don't see them coming back in a year," said Kathy Shea who has a son who will be deployed in October.

Nancy & Dave say they'll be watching tonight's State of the Union Address and will be listening closely for anything regarding military cuts.

"I'm concerned about equipment being kept up to date, personal levels training levels," Nancy said. "You're just concerned for your children's training welfare in their safety."

At Wright Patt Air Force Base there currently about 400 airman deployed overseas. While there's no way to know how many will return home by this time next year base personnel do you say the amount of troops will be winding down.
