Miami Township Officers Fight to Keep Their Department
MIAMI TOWNSHIP -- There is some concern in Miami Township that the residents could lose their police department. Miami Township police officers will spend some time this weekend lobbying to the community to support their  department.

The Facebook page to Save Miami Twp PD, Right now it has 414 likes.

The concerns began two weeks ago in a Trustee meeting where Miami Township trustees discussed the possibility of contracting police work through the Montgomery County Sheriffs and getting rid of the Miami Township police department.

"It takes a minute to get there, if we had to call somebody else it
could be 10-20 minutes. If we're paying all these taxes, we should have
the service," said Miami Township resident Juan Diaz.

There is a possibility if the change does happen, the 26,000 residents
in Miami Township will pay a few less dollars in taxes because they will
no longer have to fund an entire department. But it's not a trade many are willing to make.

"No, I'm comfortable with what we are paying now," said Miami Township resident Christina King. "I wouldn't pay less to have less service."

The Miami Township Fraternal Order of Police told us trustees didn't tell them why they were looking into deleting the
60 year old department.

"What reason can we give our viewers tonight on why their police dept may go away?" we asked. "Well that's the thing we weren't given a reason," said Miami Township detective Mike Siney.

"I want to know why, They need to back it up with the facts and the
guarantee that we as residents aren't going to suffer from the changes," said King.

"Once you do that you don't get your police dept back. That's it. We
just want to get it out to the citizens to support your Miami Township
identity. Cause that's what we're losing is our identity," said Siney.

"I have two kids and I'm a single dad so it's important that my kids
are safe. We'll always pay taxes. But police if it's gone, it won't
come back, so we might as well keep it," said Diaz.

We went to get answers from the trustees Friday. They say it's something
they have discussed but are not giving serious consideration to.

If you would like to voice your concern to save this department, you can
go to the Miami Township Administration building Tuesday night
at 7:00 for their next Trustee meeting.

Right now it's not clear if the level of service will diminish in Miami Township or if anyone would lose their job.

The last community in Montgomery County to lose its police department was Jefferson Township in 1997. The sheriff's office now patrols their streets.
