Springfield native John Legend to play Jesus in 'Jesus Christ Superstar Live'
(WKEF/WRGT) - If you tune in to Jesus Christ Superstar Live this coming Easter, you'll see a familiar face playing the role of Jesus.
Springfield native and Academy Award-winning singer/songwriter John Legend has been tapped to play the role. In a tweet Tuesday morning, Legend said he "woke up to Andrew Lloyd Webber tweeting about me. It's a good day."
Webber announced that he was thrilled to have Legend playing the role of Jesus in the re-imagined live version of the iconic musical. The musical, which originally played on the stage in 1971, takes place during the last week of Jesus' life. The story is told from the perspective of Judas Iscariot, the man who betrayed Jesus.
On Easter, 2018, the show will return to the airwaves, this time as a 3-hour event on NBC.
