Protect yourself from online scams in 2018
(WKEF/WRGT) - Better Business Bureau of Dayton and Miami Valley has strategies to reduce your risk to online fraud.
BBB says one of the most common scams to watch out for are phishing scams.
It often comes in the form of an email that has links telling you to click on them or download certain software to receive money. That malware can then access personal information, such as credit card and bank account information and social security numbers stored on your computer.
"They are going to get that information and what they attempt to do is then steal your identity, set up credit in your name, or somehow use your name and personal information for their own gain," says John North, President and CEO of BBB of Dayton and Miami Valley.
All are vulnerable if you don't have the right protection.
To minimize exposure to online scams make sure you have the latest anti-virus protection on your computer and update regularly.
The Better Business Bureau Scam Tracker is an online tool where you can either report scams or find scams going on in your area.
