Popular Oregon District restaurant may be closed for months due to a fire
DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) – A popular Oregon District restaurant that would normally be packed full for the holiday weekend will instead be silent due to a fire.
A fire sparked near the kitchen of the Salar restaurant in the early hours of Friday morning, and building owner Adil Baguirov said they may be closed for months as they work to clean up the damage.
“By the time I got here, they were well underway,” he told FOX 45’s Mike Sullivan.
He was still out at the building hours after crews knocked down the flames, as he and others began to process the restaurant’s future.
“Just extensive damage to the kitchen area, and the floors about it and the bathrooms,” Dayton Fire Department Capt. Andrew Wiley said.
“These buildings all got fire damage,” contractor Matt Andrews said. “It came through the ceilings and through the floors. They had to cut holes down in the floors to get the fire.”
Now, Andrews is left to board the windows and pick up the pieces, having been inside to access the damage.
“It’s pretty bad,” Wiley said. “I haven’t seen one this bad in a long time.”
The fire worked its way up through the building, impacting the floors above three other businesses on brown street.
Baguirov is already trying to piece together how soon the restaurant can reopen.
“That’s a great question,” he said. “No one knows yet, but it will most likely take a couple of months.”
He said the restaurant was mostly booked for the weekend, but now has to cancel all orders.
Instead, Salar will be quiet this holiday weekend while the rest of East 5th Street celebrates.
