Police: Babysitter, driver arrested for transporting kids in the back of a U-Haul
ELYRIA, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- Two adults were charged with child endangering for transporting children in the back of a U-Haul truck, according to multiple reports.
Brian Dekam, 55, and Jamie Adkin, 25, were arrested by police in Elyria after witnesses said they saw six people (five juveniles) piling into the back of the van. Adkin was in the back with the children. Dekam was driving, while Adkin's fiance was in the passenger seat, WEWS reports.
Police say the children were sweating from the heat with temperatures climbing into the 90s. The children's ages ranged from two to 15.
The youngest child was taken to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Elyria for heat exhaustion before being air lifted to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital for further treatment.
Adkins told investigators they had left for a flea market at 4:30 a.m. in Amherst (roughly 35 miles west of Cleveland) and were on their way back when they stopped at a gas station for drinks.
According to WJW, Adkins was the babysitter of the four younger children. She told police she started taking care of the kids two weeks ago and hasn't seen their mother since.
Both Adkin and Dekam are being held on $13,000 bond.
