Grocery store fire leaves people without food, local food pantry answers the call

Grocery store fire leaves people without food, local food pantry answers the call.

UPDATE: With God's Grace served a total of 2,117 people Tuesday. 675 families went to the pantry's special opening to get food, which is a jump from the norm of 550.

Executive Director Nicole Adkins said 341 of the families were from the neighborhood affected by the Food for Less fire.

DAYTON, Ohio (WRGT/WKEF) -- Flames tore through a Dayton grocery store leaving a community searching for food before thanksgiving.

Last week, the fire burned Food for Less in east Dayton nearly to the ground, and turned the community into a “food desert”. With God’s Grace food pantry is becoming an oasis for those who relied on the store to feed their families.

“We have a lot of families that are coming through,” Executive Director Nicole Adkins said.

On average, With God’s Grace serves about 60 people per hour, but on Tuesday they were hitting 100. The pantry is normally opened the first three Wednesdays of the month, but had a special opening on Tuesday.

Christina Jones was there because Food for Less was her go to store. Her daughter lives near the grocery store, and watched it burn.

“It was still smoking on Saturday,” Jones said, “That's why I'm here, I need help.”

“The ones that used to depend on that store, now it's gone,” Adkins said, “A lot of them are in walking distance, they don't have a car, and they don't have the extra funds to take the RTA bus.”

Lynn Belt came to With God’s Grace because she has a family of five, and Food for Less was her “mom and pop” shop. It helps her stay on budget because she said the Kroger near her is overpriced.

“Now we are going to have to figure out how to get everything for Thanksgiving,” Belt said.

With God's Grace serves around 3,200 families per month, but that number may rise for November. They are open to all people in the area if you can show the need.
